AT LEAST 10 PEOPLE ABOARD A JAPANESE CRUISE SHIP HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH THE DEADLY CORONAVIRUS; AS A RESULT, THE SHIP HAS BEEN QUARANTINED IN YOKOHAMA SINCE MONDAY
Japanese cruise ship, The Diamond Princess, has been caught up in a global health emergency after an 80-year-old man from Hong Kong, boarded the ship on 20th January in Yokohama – Japan, travelling to Hong Kong, he disembarked the ship on 25th January, upon falling ill, he was later tested and confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus.
Due how contagious and deadly the viral outbreak has become, panic set in amongst officials and the cruise liner was called into port at Yokohama on Monday and testing soon began on guests and crew members; as a result, 300 people out of the 3,700 aboard have been tested for the coronavirus and 10 people have been officially diagnosed. Officials are now saying they expect this number to rise.
The coronavirus has an incubation period of around five days; symptoms usually start with a fever, followed by a dry cough. If you’re young and healthy then a full recovery should be expected.
All of the people who have been confirmed to have the virus are over the age of 50, this has caused great concern for officials as the virus is most deadly to children, the elderly and infirm. The virus kills by causing acute respiratory distress; meaning, those with any type of lung disease or breathing difficulties are more at risk of the deadly effects of the virus.
While all ten patients are said to be in a stable condition, they have been removed from the cruise liner and sent to medical facilities for treatment. The remaining passengers of the ship must remain quarantined within their cabins for the next 14 days.
This emergency comes after a separate ship carrying 3,600 passengers was docked at Hong Kong and after three passengers who had travelled aboard the ship tested positive for the coronavirus, routine testing began on all guests and crew, especially after some crew members began to complain of cold and flu like symptoms.
The coronavirus is quickly becoming, an ever more pressing issue for China, over 24,00 people in China alone have now been confirmed to have the virus and the total deaths are quickly approaching 500. To try and prevent the further spread of the virus, the Chinese government have requesting that over 18 million people in the east of the country, remain indoors and stay at home.
The government has also built two new hospitals since the outbreak started and 11 large public venues in Wuhan, the epicentre of the virus, have been converted into makeshift hospitals to treat people suspected of having the virus and provide an additional ten-thousand beds for the sick.
President XI Jinping has spoken out publicly stating that preventative measures are have a positive effect on the situation and that he was confident China could win the war against this virus; however, sceptics and critics aren’t too sure, many people have been outspoken about the Chinese authorities handling of the outbreak and reports from inside China suggest that the Chinese government could be ‘downplaying’ the seriousness and true statistics related to the virus.
