Nicholas Godejohn has decided to talk to the press and give his account of what happened that infamous summer night on 14th June 2015, that would forever change the course of his life. It was on this night that Nicholas would murder his ex-girlfriends (Gypsy Rose Blanchard) Mother.
Nicholas decided to speak out and talk to the press, after he felt the scales had been tipped in favour of his ex partner and co conspirator, Gypsy Rose Blanchard, and felt as if he wasn’t getting a fair amount of coverage for his part in the crime. Godejohn felt like this was the perfect opportunity to give his opinion, thoughts and feelings on what took place during the night of the murder.
For those who have yet to watch Hulu’s, Emmy nominated, TV series The Act, or those who are overall unfamiliar with the case, Gypsy Rose was a young girl who had suffered years of abuse at the hands of her mentally ill mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Dee Dee was believed to be suffering from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental disorder where a caregiver either exaggerates, fabricates or induces illness to someone under their care. After years of abuse and convincing family and friends that her daughter, Gypsy. was unable to walk or feed herself and hand a number of physical and mental ailments and impairments, Gypsy decided to ask her then boyfriend, Nick Godejohn, the kill her Mum so that she could escape.
Dee Dee Blanchard had no idea that her daughter had a boyfriend whom she had been secretly talking to for months, nor did she know that her own daughter, was conspiring to have her murdered with said boyfriend. Late in the night on 14th June 2015, after Dee Dee had returned to their home in Springfield, Missouri, after a visit to the doctors office with Gypsy Rose, Gypsy let her waiting boyfriend into the house, handed him some gloves, a knife and some duct tape and pointed to the room where her Mother was sleeping. After instructing Gypsy to go into the bathroom and wait for him, Godejohn crept into Dee Dee’s bedroom and repeatedly stabbed her until she was dead.
The whole world was sent into a frenzy when the main stream media broke the story, people were glued to the media waiting to hear more. In the months following, friends and neighbors were shocked to learn that the girl they thought was fragile, frail and severely disabled was actually very able bodied and had a huge part to play in the murder of her own mother.
The way she was raised, no woman, no child, should ever have to be raised that way…Nicholas Godejohn – 2019
The aftermath of the murder saw many people come out in support of Gypsy Rose, they felt as though she had been the victim of very severe abuse. As the case went on it would soon become a cult classic as documentaries and TV series’ were made covering the case.
The focus of these documentaries and TV shows, were always firmly focused on Gypsy and the abuse she had suffered, this has led to a frustrated Nicholas Godejohn deciding to speak up and try and tell his side of the story.
Nick claims to still be madly, deeply in love with Gypsy and despite now having a new fiancé, who regularly visits her at Missouri’s Chillicothe Correctional Center, the prison where she is serving her sentence, Nick says he will always hold affection and love for Gypsy.
Nicholas said that the only thing he’d do differently, if he could go back, was that he’d choose to run away with Gypsy and get her pregnant which would force Dee Dee to accept him and allow him to be apart of Gypsy’s life.
I’d try and get her to prolong it (the murder), to a longer date, to maybe go a different route than what we did do.Nicholas talking about what he’d do differently if he could go back in time
Nick also says that he wishes he’d run away with Gypsy a lot sooner so she wouldn’t have had to suffer the prolonged abuse she did.
Talking about his past Nick said that when he was fourteen-years-old he was able to see ‘something dark’ inside him and it wasn’t until he met Gypsy Rose that he felt able to explore this dark side.
During his interview, Nick tells the reported that when he was staying with his grandma one day, he looked in the mirror and was caught a glimpse of something that made him aware there was a darker part of him. He says that he now regrets he explored that darker side of his personality with girlfriend Gypsy.
That darker side of me that’s triggered by anger, it wanted to come out for a very long time, unfortunately, the very first opportunity it got, it didn’t waste any trying to make an example out of somebody.
Nick says that on the night of the murder, he felt as though he had an angel and devil on each of his shoulders, the angel was whispering in on ear “take her and run” while the devil was whispering in the other “this bitch is dead”.
Godejohn says when he heard the Devil say that, it enraged him further and inflamed his anger. It was in that moment he made his decision as he instructed Gypsy to get in the bathroom and he followed through on his agreement and went ahead and murdered Dee Dee.
People across social media are fiercely debating this case, some are calling for Gypsy to be released and view her as a victim of serious abuse who had no other option but to conspire to murder her mother to get her out of a difficult situation, while others think Gypsy should have been given the same life sentence Godejohn was given and see her as nothing more than an intelligent and manipulative person who used Godejohn to do what she couldn’t.
Whatever side of the fence you’re on, there’s no doubting that everyone involved in this case from Dee Dee to Gypsy to Godejohn, were all victims in some way, shape or form.
