I RECENTLY USED A WEBSITE CALLED PURSE, WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO USE CRYPTOCURRENCY TO PURCHASE ALMOST ANYTHING FROM AMAZON AT A HUGE DISCOUNT.
It was the early hours of Thursday 11th April 2019 and I was sat at my computer looking over my cryptocurrency portfolio, once I had finished with my crypto work, my mind started to wander, and I started to think about what I’d like to spend my weekend doing.
‘I know’, I thought to myself, ‘I’ll buy a new board-game or two and have a games night.’ So it was settled, I took off to YouTube and Reddit, found the games I wanted to purchase and set off to Amazon to purchase the games.
That’s when a thought struck me, wouldn’t it be good if I could purchase from Amazon using Crypto, surely something must exist out there that allows you to do this?
I conducted a quick Google search and I came across the website Purse.io the website links buyers up with people who have Amazon Gift Cards or Credit. You can pretty much buy anything from Amazon US & UK (possibly other countries too but I’ve not tested that).
You can either search for your item directly on Purse.io (highly recommended if you’re from the United States) or create your own list on Amazon UK and import that list into Purse.io, this was the route I went down as to find UK products and pricing is extremely difficult.
Once you’ve imported your items, you head on over to the basket and choose what discount you’d like to receive. You can choose anywhere between 5% – 33% discount off your order, though for first time buyers you’re limited to 15% off.
The smaller the discount, the quicker your order will be picked up by someone and fulfilled, the larger the discount the longer you may have to wait for that order to be fulfilled.
For my first order I decided to buy an old puzzle from my childhood that I ordered, a wooden, marble solitaire board, along with two new games that I’d never tried before called Forbidden Island (a co-op survive and escape board game) & Dinosaur Tea Party (a board game that’s similar to Guess-Who).
My order total should have come to £56.25 in total, however, as a first time buyer I was allowed to request up to a 15% discount; which meant my grand total actually came to £49.11 giving me a saving of £7.14.
During the checkout, I chose to pay with Bitcoin Cash, however, you can choose to pay with Bitcoin or use ShapeShift to pay with Ethereum, Litecoin, ZCash or if you simply want to take advantage of the discount and aren’t to fussed with the crypto aspect, you can pay via Credit or Debit Card. You can also use a wide range of other cryptocurrencies, so long as ShapeShift supports it, you can pay using the Crypto of your choice.
Once you have paid and your confirmations have gone through, you will have to wait for someone to pick up your order and fulfill it. As explained above, the smaller the discount the faster your order will be fulfilled, if you’re in a hurry to get something, I’d recommend choosing a discount of 15% and under.
With this being the first time I had used the website, I was a little apprehensive, especially as I’m a Prime Member, I could have got next day delivery and just saved myself the hassle, after all my saving was mediocre, however, it was the larger future discounts that would be unlocked to me after my first order that enticed me to give it a go and stick at it.
I was pleased I did, the next day on 12th April an Amazon delivery driver knocked on my door with my order in hand.
I have to admit, I didn’t expect the whole process to go so smoothly and quickly, I was pleasantly surprised. My order was fulfilled by a reputable member called joseignacio0197, once I had checked my items, I headed over to Purse.io and left positive feedback and released the funds that Purse were holding in escrow to the user.
This is true adoption, Purse is opening the door and allowing people to actually use and spend Crypto as a form of payment as it was intended to be used.
For the largest part, Crypto is seen as an investment and a lot of people tend to hold onto their coins as opposed to spending them, this is in large part due to not many retailers allowing you to spend or use Crypto but Purse.io is just one of many websites that are trying to change this.
There are some downsides to the platform.
It’s not the most user friendly and doesn’t have the friendliest of UI’s, however, if you’ve managed to buy and store bitcoin or other crypto’s then you shouldn’t have any real trouble with using or navigating the Purse website.
The largest downside by far is that the whole experience is much more friendly if you are from the United States, the easiest way for my to find UK products was to create a list on Amazon UK and then import it on the Purse website.
There may be ways around this but for me that was the easiest and quickest way for me to get what I needed done.
The only other real downside is that if you do choose a larger discount after your first order, you will likely have to wait for it to be fulfilled by someone. I’m currently looking at a gaming chair that’s around £300 but I can get it for £180 on Purse BUT the website shows an average of a 10 day wait just for the order to be fulfilled and even then there are no guarantees.
The website does come with built in protections, Purse acts as an escrow making sure your funds are safe and stay in their control until your goods are delivered and you’re happy with them.
I haven’t had to return anything yet and can imagine this may cause some issues if you had to do so, so that’s something to always keep in mind as well.
In conclusion, if you’re looking for a way to spend cryptocurrency on Amazon then Purse.io is the way to go. The speed and process was simple, fun, fast and pleasant, I couldn’t recommend them highly enough!
